To Freelance Or Not To Freelance? Legal Translation Is The Question!
If you own a business which deals with foreign clients on an ongoing basis, you will often find yourself having to deal with the issue of language translation. Obviously as a business, you want to ensure that you receive a good quality translation service at an affordable price. So the issue that faces many companies is whether you should hire a freelance translator, or contact a translation agency and perhaps pay a little more than you would for a freelancer. Either way, a decision needs to be made: To freelance, or not to freelance, THAT is the question!
Let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of each separate entity and then perhaps sum these factors up and see which way we find ourselves leaning:
Freelance language translators:
There is no shortage of freelance language translators around the world. All you need to do is a quick Google search and you will be faced with hundreds of translators just begging to take care of your language translation needs. The first issue you will face is trying to figure out who is a good translator and who is going to waste your time and money. I mean, how do you, as an English speaking person, know whether or not someone’s French language translation is grammatically and factually correct? Do you hire another freelancer to proof the first freelancer’s work? Seems a bit extensive doesn’t it?
On the other hand though, maybe a particular freelancer has a really good reference and track record and comes recommended by other companies. This way, at least you know they’re the real deal. Chances are that their language translation services will be cheaper than an agency so you’ll at least be saving a few pounds.
So, perhaps they’ll save you some money, but what happens when you suddenly need specialized language translation? Something like medical or legal translation – your average freelancer is most likely not going to know the medical translation for PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS – which is a real word I’ll have you know, it is a lung disease caused by breathing in particles of siliceous volcanic dust. Ok, so I’ve chosen the longest word (literally) in the English dictionary as an example, but the fact is that a specialized medical language translator would know what the correct French term for this disease is.
Language translation agency:
The biggest “con” when it comes to hiring a language translation agency versus hiring a freelancer, is the cost involved. Naturally, a language translation agency is usually going to be a little more expensive. The reason however is that you are most likely going to be receiving a more efficient, varied and organized service from an official language translation agency.
Finding a reputable language translation agency will be a lot easier than trying to figure out if a freelancer is adequate or not. A simple Google search coupled with a little research will get you in touch with a translation agency in no time.
Language translation agencies are also more likely to specialize in numerous fields as opposed to just basic translation. If you’re dealing with foreign matters, you’ll need to find a reputable legal translation agencythat is equipped with language translators who have a legal background and understand the different trends in law from different countries.
Agencies obviously also have more capacity to take on numerous tasks at once, so you’ll never be left waiting too long for anything to be done. With the fact that they have numerous language translators in an agency as well, you can be assured that your work will be done by one translator and then proofed by another translator which results in more accurate and professional work.
Conclusion:
Well, clearly I had already had my mind made up before writing this article, but in my experience hiring a professional language translation agency is always going to result in a more efficient service. Yes, you will most likely have to pay a little bit more, but this is nothing compared to the costs that could result from an incorrectly translated legal document. So, the answer to the question: To freelance or not to freelance? Language translation agency is the answer!
